Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series is under way pitting two of the best conferences in the country. The Pac-10 will get a chance to prove whether it is not worthy of the attention it has received as the best league in college basketball. The Big 12 is top heavy with Kansas and Texas are aware of the rest, but there are a number of exciting teams and players spread throughout the other 10 teams. Arizona and Kansas kicked the challenge by playing an overtime thriller, as Jayhawks pulled out 75-72. Stanford will visit Texas Tech on December 22 to close the series, which will continue for at least 3 more seasons.
This series was created for a couple of reasons; television money and rank near the top. But it also provides teams with a planning mechanism to have a built-in non-conference matchup, which will look great on the tournament resume come March. Each league will have a chance to demonstrate his team on national television and potentially increasing its status as an elite conference. As a result, NCAA hoops fans benefit by getting to see some good basketball and good basetball teams, especially from markets they do not always get to see. With regard to the competition itself, Pac 10 seems to be the strongest league on paper and in pre-season hype category. But at this time, each conference has six teams are entered in the 65 here on Bracketography. One could make a good argument that the Big 12 Triumvirate of Kansas, Texas and Texas A & M is as good as the Pac 10's UCLA, Arizona and Washington St., therefore, the Big 12 can use this event to sway public opinion in its favor, if it comes out on top.
Big 12 and Pacific-10 conferences have announced the dates and matchups for the 2008 Big 12 / Pac-10 Hardwood Series. The series is in its second year after beginning competition during the 2007-08 season.
Most of the games is scheduled for December 4-7, with three taking place outside the four-day series window. Each matchup is a return contest from 2007. 2009 games in the series will be played Dec. 3-6, while meetings in 2010 will take place Dec. 2-5. After this season, new pairings will be in place for the next two years of the scheme.
